What The Teacher Reads Posters

Hey everyone!

Quick blog post here, dropping off a freebie for you! I want my kids to know that I'm reading and help instill that love for reading.

Quite honestly, I almost forgot to blog this. Whoops! But it's crazy around here, especially since I'll be headed to Vegas in two days!

Sub tip: You can start putting together your own bag of tricks, like a book, activities, etc.

Teacher tip: This is the time to get your sub binder in order :)

Substitute Preparedness: Reading Series!

Hey everyone!

Nothing like realizing on a Saturday evening that tomorrow is the first day of the month...meaning my monthly series! In my defense, my grandma's 80th birthday party, the end of the year, my subbing, and job hunting has kind of taken over my life the last few weeks.

Ok, enough about that, let's get on to the main attraction!

Sub Tip: This is the time to be applying for jobs!

Teacher Tip: Take a picture of your classroom before you pack up for the year. This way you'll know what it looks like for the next year, without having to remember!

Editing: COPS and Badge Buddies

Hey everyone!

I'm jealous that some of you are out of school already. Just a few more weeks and I'm there too!

My teacher friend had a few kiddos that were struggling with their editing during writing. They would say they were finished but looking at their paper, there wasn't any punctuation. Talk about a run-on sentence! After giggling as I demonstrated what their paper sounded like in one run-on, we got down to business.

Another teacher friend of mine had a brilliant idea! She'd seen the "COPS" thing on Pinterest and blogs and decided to a spin on it. Cue the badges from Dollar Tree.

This is how I would use them. Pick a few kids that have no problem editing at all. They are the ones that get badges and become "Badge Buddies". When they are done writing, they can pair up with the ones that need that editing help!

Of course I had to put my spin on it and also make a few things to go along with this, including a poster and a badge buddy certificate! I mean, any chance to use clip art to make cute things is a good reason, right?

I've added color and b/w versions, along with bullet and non bullet versions. And two badge certificates! This will hopefully make editing more fun!

Substitute Preparedness: Summertime Roll

Hey everyone! It's that time again!

Events this month: 

• Cinco de Mayo May 5
• National Teacher Day May 6
• Mother's Day May 11
• Memorial Day May 26

Teacher Tip: It's the end of the year and the kids can smell summer vacation. Have a little fun with sight words by turning off the lights and grabbing two flashlights. Have kids race to find a sight word by lighting it up with the flashlight.

Sub tip: School is nearing the end. Hang in there! And remember: smile!

Substitute Preparedness #3: Luck o' the Irish

Hey everyone!

Teacher Tip: I enjoyed subbing last St. Patty's Day. I had a little fun with the 2nd graders who weren't very believing... and it took just a few dollars and some imagination.

Substitute Preparedness #2: Bitten By The Love Bug

Hey everyone!

Yes I know I usually post this on the first Sunday, but there's another special post tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Substitute Preparedness is the topic today.

     Teaching Tip this month: Valentine's Day is the month. Woohoo! Or not. Leftover candy? You can put it in your prize box, donate it to someone else, or make art projects with them.

Events this month:

• Winter Olympics- February 7-23
• Boy Scouts Day -February 8th
• Valentine's Day-February 14
• Black History Month-Feb 1-28

Sub Tip: Subbing on Valentine's Day? If there is a party, try to have it at the end of the day. That way the kids aren't hyped up all day.  Have extra time? Have kids make hearts to put up. I've subbed on Valentine's Day a few times. One time there was a party but the teacher had nothing for the kids. I wrote a personalized card for each kid and put hearts up all around the room. They loved it!

Substitute Preparedness: Hello 2014!

Hey everyone!

Substitute Preparedness is back! I gave my monthly button a little face lift :)

Do you like it? I like it because it has my pic so now you can see me lol.

   Along with a new button, I decided that there would be a newer format for my series. I'll still have a freebie. The first half of the year it'll be math and then in June I'll switch to reading. If you joined me last year, then you'll know I have a dice roll for most of my freebies. After this year, it should be finished with the seasons/holidays :) 

   Getting back to the format, I've pretty much covered sub tub and sub prep stuff. I'm going to try to be more of a monthly/timely tips. Sub tips, events/holidays of the month, and ideas for the class for the month. Plus my freebie. 

  So, let's get this party started!  

    My teaching tip for January...the kids will most likely be hyper from vacation. Stay strong with behavior management! Maybe spruce up your existing system. For example, if the kids are trying to earn 10 points (or however many) for an earned activity, maybe change what it looks like. 10 snowflakes, mystery prize, or whatever!  I know some friends are doing Whole Brain Teaching, so the management part with the smiley face/frowny face points could be something to try.

     Holidays or events this month (beginning of Feb.)?

• Chinese New Year -Jan. 31
• Black History Month- The month of February
• Groundhog's Day- February 2

Sub tip this month: Make sure you have new and fresh stuff in your sub bag! New year, new stuff.

Substitute Preparedness #12: Winterize Your Sub Tub!

Hey everyone!

Oh my word y'all (can I use y'all now that I was in Texas for a week?), who would have thought that I've done a year's worth of sub prep posts already? This year went FAST!  So here we are, sub preparedness numero 12.

So I wanted to do something clever for this post. A cool topic to discuss. But then nothing came to me. Nada. Zero. Zilch. And I was in Texas for a week. I even got to meet up with my buddy Reagan. And I got to go to the Alamo and some missions. And go to Dallas and see the JFK sites and go to the museum.  And eat delicious food (Tex Mex...Whataburger... BBQ...). And then on Thanksgiving, I went to the Cowboys game. As in my first NFL game ever. At the largest stadium ever. And there was this cute guy next to me (Hi Joe! Don't know if you'll ever find my blog lol). Thankfully they won or it would have been a long flight home with my father. I'll do a post with pics later!


So now my blog post is mostly about Texas and nothing to do with winter and prepping for a sub in the winter and making it through until winter break and I'm rambling. *sigh* And I'm already thinking of doing this next year and how will I top my dice roll activities? Maybe make it literacy since y'all will have a ton of math activities now? Let me know!!!

Sort of on topic...things that are winter related your sub can do:

*Read winter books
*Have a paper snowball fight (have topics or story starters on each paper and the kids use this for writing)
*Winter Art- snowflakes, snowmen, etc.
*If I lived in a snowglobe...(writing and/or art project)
*Puffy Paint Fun-snowman, snowflakes, snow

Substitute Preparedness 11: Fall Activities for Your Subs

Hey everyone!
It's that time again!

I love subbing in the fall so much (except for the sickness). There are so many fun activities to do with kids with pumpkins and leaves!
Most of the teachers I sub for let me do art because they don't usually have time or it's something easy in the sub plans. So here are some fun fall activities for your sub to do...

*Leaf rubbings
*Coloring in blank leaves
*Leaf hunt- record and graph how many of each leaf color you find
*Ripped leaf fall tree art project
*Read "Leaf Man" and kids collect leaves to make their own leaf man (or woman)
*In the fall I like to... writing activity
*Kids turn leaf into other projects and write about it
