  1. My sub tip is to have a class meeting about expectations for a sub dat, and then follow up with a meeting the next day to discuss wether those expectation were met in order to receive the agreed upon class reward. The kids feel like a part of the process and hold themselves responsible for the results. :)

  2. I talk with the students about expectations for while I am gone and lay out consequences for what will happen if I get their name from the sub.

  3. I always have two templates saved on Word. One for the regular days and one for Wed. (since we get out early). All I have to change are the actual lessons. I also have pictures of the kids and their names/numbers in a page protector for the subs.

  4. I keep a set of emergency sub plans ready to go. I also have a great team I can rely on to help prep things in an emergency. :)

  5. As a sub. I can tell you PLEASE have an up-to-date class list, general schedule (lunch, recess, specials' times), & a list of reliable kids & kids to keep an extra eye on.

  6. Post expectations. Provide everything so there is no searching, and list names of reliable students!

  7. I have everything under the sun that I can think of, in a sub binder. It is full of information. It has been a life saver, one less thing to worry about preparing.

  8. Tip for a sub: Leave detailed plans. More the better. Every sub I have spoken to, prefers lots of details of behavior plans, helpful students, any medical concerns. And if you have a phone in your room.. Directions how to use it! Each school is different. Even leave numbers for other teachers that are helpful. Its also important to let them know emergency evacuations

  9. My Sub Tip is to always prepare extra activities and always leave enough work for those fast finishers!

  10. My tip is to always have a sheet of address labels printed out with the individual student names on the labels. This way, the students can wear these name tags to help out the sub.

  11. Always leave a read aloud and paper to make a book mark about it in case the sub needs a quiet activity or if lessons finish early.

  12. One tip is to have plenty of "may do" activities just in case! Better to keep busy and out of trouble!

  13. I always use the sub tub to help keep me prepared for a sub. I always have extra practice worksheets in there to fill those moments where I might not have something planned.

  14. I have emergency sub plans, but if it's a planned absence I try to have everything written out in detail--what to do, who to call of you need help, etc. and have everything laid out as far as what is needed for the day and planet of extras for any unforeseen open times or rain.

  15. My substitute tips: Over plan for your sub in very detailed plans. Also allow for flexibility. There have been many times where I planned too much curriculum and then got upset that I had to reteach. Last thought: preview the day with your students and pick a student to be the subs assistant. The students know how the classroom runs might as well use it as a resource for your sub!
