Shopping and a Lesson

I just got back from shopping at Walmart and there were a few things I wanted to share with you. First few are physical items, the rest are mental items ;)

I want that turquoise quatrefoil because it matches my blog!!!!

I HAD to buy this!!!! Isn't it just a notebook you ask? No....

It's an iPad holder! Yay! And that's some of my  blogger buddies, Amber and Lindsay!

Ok, now for the more mental part. No I'm not crazy (yet lol). But I've always been honest with you all and this is a part of my life. And it's what made me start my blog. I always try to be upbeat on here, but my life isn't always upbeat. I get sad. Especially this time of year when my friends are getting ready for school and I'm packing my sub bag.

In front of me checking out was a teacher. Behind me checking out was a teacher. One from each of my school districts. Both asked if I was working full time. I always feel a little weird because when I say no, I automatically start thinking about what they're thinking. Like , "She's not good enough I guess" and other stuff. I know it's silly because I know I'm good enough. I do, but those thoughts still go through my head that they are judging me. Though one teacher wanted my card and she said, "So I can request you every time I'm gone."

Now I could sit here and cry (maybe I did for a minute). But what good would that do? It doesn't solve anything and besides, my mascara would run! I feel that I was led to start a blog for a reason. To help other subs and teachers out there. To help teachers across the world. I mean, some of my stuff that I create is being used across the world? How could I be sad about that? If I was working full time, I don't know how much time I'd have to create products. Less than normal, that's for sure.

And when I get comments from other subs and teachers that I've helped them, I know I'm doing the right thing. The feedback like these two make it worth it and put a smile on my face.

How could this not make me smile?!?! P.S.... if you use one of my items in your class, I would LOVE to see pics of it in action! Let me know! And maybe if I put it on my blog, you'll get something *hint hint*

Or this feedback?

The kids loved it...yay!

I'm not looking for sympathy, I just felt like that I was meant to share it. Maybe someone was needing to hear that they are not alone or that it will be ok. I know when the time is right, it will happen. I know that God has something in store and that I just have to wait (patiently). I'll leave you with this quote (feel free to grab the pic).

  1. Keep your chin up, girl! You are fabulous and the right full time job will come for you when you are least expecting it. In the meantime, continue rocking on!

  2. I feel for you. I had several years in a small town of interviewing and never getting hired full time, so I know your frustration. Hang in there - your time will come. And you are still using and sharing your talent with all of us. Thank you for being honest.

  3. Thank you for writing this! It is EXACTLY what I needed to hear today. I'm going on year number six of subbing and can't seem to land my dream job. I find myself avoiding stores like Target and Staples for fear of running into someone who wants to know if I'm working full time yet. The answer is always the same, sadly, no I'm not. I know that I do a wonderful job subbing (if I wasn't, I wouldn't get requested back into classrooms, right?). Again, thank you for everything you do, and thank you for taking the time to write this :)

    2. I'll be going on my 6th year of subbing over here too!

Luckily, I live in a "major" city (I'm actually not sure how major it is but there are 5 divisions within it) so I don't run into teachers asking me if I've been hired somewhere yet. Those questions come from my family. Blah. Just had a family gathering this weekend and another at the end of July and had to keep sharing the "no I don't have a classroom" news a few too many times.

I have good feelings about this year though. I'm confident that even if I don't get a teaching position that subbing is where I'm supposed to be... but hopefully I get that classroom of my own.

      ... hopefully we all do!

  5. My best friend has tried to get a teaching job for 7 years now and she finally got one this summer. Her first day of in-service was today and her kids come on Thursday. I know her and know her heart and she will make an INCREDIBLE teacher. I never could understand why no one would hire her. I'm super excited for her and am looking forward to her first year. Hang in there girl! God has something GREAT in store for you!

  6. I've been subbing for ten years. I worked full time one year, then stayed home with my own kids for a few years. I'm now working on my Masters, hoping it will help me get a full time position.

  7. Hello lovely Miss T! I totally get the avoidance of Walmart and why, and I am so sure you'll land where you're meant to be. But in the mean time, never underestimate the difference you make with little ones who need an amazing teacher on those days the teacher is away. Sometimes it only takes one day to make a difference in a child's life. You're awesome!

  8. Would it help if I called you and squealed in your ear again???? Seriously, I understand ....But as I told a gal that subs for us in our district. When we HAVE to be gone to take care of our families, go to the dr etc., it is so nice knowing that when we leave our rooms that it is in capable hands...That is a sign of a good person....if you (or our gal) were working full time who would we leave our rooms with.....Thanks for all you do here on the blog and in those classrooms.....PS have I mentioned I HATE WALMART.....:)

  9. I completely understand, and thank you for writing it. It made me realize I wasn't the only one (especially when so many of the other subs were mom's just doing it to make a little extra class). It actually made me give up on teaching a few years ago. I gave away everything I saved. I was completely unemployed for about a year until I took a warehouse job packing boxes. That job made me realize I needed to be teaching so I took whatever I could get - and what I got was a low paying K job in a day care. And even still, with a full time position, I still find myself hoping to avoid the teachers I used to work with because I'd have to explain my "step down". Stick with it. Remember, great subs make a teacher's job 100x's easier and we thank you!

  13. Thank you for this! I graduated with my teaching degree in May and was full of hope that I would land a full-time teaching job, but no such luck. I am on the sub list for two school districts and your blog has been amazingly helpful at helping me prepare for subbing. My university didn't have a class on preparing for subbing, so I am super thankful for your blog!

  14. You words are exactly how I feel at this time of year. I'm going into my 3rd year of subbing while teachers with less certifications get hired ahead of me. The questions by friends and family are THE worst. I know they are just concerned about me, but it's SO overwhelming sometimes. It DOES help to know that others feel the same way, so THANK YOU for posting this! I am a kindred spirit sub. with you! ;-)

  15. Hang in there! It will happen. I have also sat in on interviews. There were a lot of qualified candidates but interviewing was not their forte, not saying yours isn't, but they wouldn't get hired because they were too long winded or didn't answer the question concisely, etc. It is perfectly OK for you to ask for feedback after the interview. My ex-husband was a recruiter and it is done all the time.

  16. Thank you so much! I've been feeling the same way, as I hope each day that I'll get a call for a job or even another interview...but it hasn't happened and school starts in 5 days. I'm lucky to be subbing for two school districts and I know everything happens for a reason. So thank you for helping me keep my head up and you should do the same. Subbing can only make us better teachers!! And thank you for the blog...I can't wait to go through all of your posts to get myself ready for the school year!
